Okocha seeks historic impact as minister

Posted : 15 July 2023
Super Eagles legend Austin Okocha has responded to reports suggesting his potential appointment as Nigeria's Minister of Youth and Sports under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

Okocha expressed surprise at the news, learning about it through news reports rather than direct contact from government officials.

Beninese journalist Hugues Zinsou Zounon shared on Twitter that Okocha would be thrilled to assume the role but hopes for official verification soon.

Although no official confirmation has been made, Okocha brings substantial experience in Nigeria's sporting landscape.

He played a pivotal role in the Super Eagles' victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and won a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

In recent years, he served as the technical adviser of the youth and sports committee in Enugu state and held the position of chairman at the Delta State Football Association.

This experience provided him with insights into governance and government policies related to youth and sports development in Nigeria.

Beyond his national contributions, Okocha has been involved in FIFA and participated in committees established by CAF to address important issues in African football.

If appointed, Okocha would make history as the first former international footballer to hold the position of Minister of Youth and Sports in Nigeria.

His potential appointment brings hope for the development of Nigeria's sports sector, which has faced challenges due to mismanagement in the past.
