Ogbuehi shines in Barcelona win; Osho, Torunarigha complicate Chelle’s selection; Osimhen, Lookman score

Posted : 10 March 2025

On Sunday, March 9, 2025, several Nigerian players made a significant impact abroad. Christantus Uche’s strong performance for Getafe in their 2-1 upset victory over Atletico Madrid earned him a place in Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s provisional squad. In Sevilla’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, Chidera Ejuke scored the match-winning goal, his second La Liga goal of the season, helping Sevilla to their ninth league victory. Additionally, Nzubechi Ogbuehi netted for Osasuna II in their 2-0 triumph over Barcelona II in the Primera División RFEF.

In Italy, Ademola Lookman continued his impressive form for Atalanta, scoring in their dominant 4-0 victory against Juventus. Lookman’s goal took his tally to 13 league goals, equaling his best-ever season total with the club, and he also became the ninth player in Atalanta’s history to reach 50 goals. Meanwhile, in France, Gabriel Osho, another player named in Chelle’s squad, played a vital role in Auxerre’s 2-0 win over Reims in Ligue 1. His strong performances have made him difficult to exclude from the final squad. However, it was a tough outing for Moses Simon, who came on as a substitute in Nantes’ 1-0 loss to Strasbourg.

Jordan Torunarigha, another candidate for the Super Eagles' World Cup qualifiers squad, delivered a solid defensive performance as Gent won 1-0 at Antwerp. Raphael Onyedika, fully recovered from injury, played for Club Brugge in their 3-1 derby win over Cercle Brugge. Former Nigerian youth international Promise David scored twice for Union Saint-Gilloise, leading them to a 3-0 victory against Standard Liège. In Greece, Bruno Onyemaechi made a successful full debut for Olympiacos in their 1-0 win over OFI in the Super League, while Samson Obioha netted a consolation goal for Ethnikos Neo Keramidi in a 2-1 loss to PAOK II in Super League 2.

In India, Stephen Eze featured for Jamshedpur in the Indian Super League, but Daniel Chima was the standout performer for Chennaiyin. Chima scored twice and provided an assist in their dominant 5-2 win over Jamshedpur. In Kazakhstan, Chinedu Geoffrey scored his first goal of the season in Astana’s 2-0 away victory over Kyzyl-Zhar, continuing his strong form from last season. Rasheed Akanbi’s remarkable run continued in Moldova as he scored his fifth goal in two games, leading Sheriff Tiraspol to a 3-0 win over Spartanii Selemet.

Bamidele Yusuf’s 73rd-minute goal secured Vojvodina’s 1-0 victory over Jedinstvo in Serbia, marking his 11th goal in 25 league games this season. Yusuf currently sits in joint second place in the Super Liga scoring charts. In Turkey, new Super Eagles invitee Anthony Dennis played for Goztepe in their 3-1 loss to Sivasspor, with his side playing most of the match with ten men.

Victor Osimhen continued his excellent form in Turkey, scoring the second-half winner for Galatasaray in their 2-1 victory over Alanyaspor. With 23 goals in all competitions this season, Osimhen is now Nigeria’s highest-scoring player in Europe.
