Official: NFF hiring expatriate adviser, scouting Nigeria-eligible talent

Posted : 14 June 2024

The Nigeria Football Federation issued a press release following a meeting with the Honorable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, and Super Eagles coach Finidi George on Thursday, June 13.

The Super Eagles are currently in a precarious position in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, trailing Rwanda, South Africa, and the Republic of Benin by four points after four matchdays.

A major announcement from Abuja is that the NFF Executive Committee has decided to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in preparation for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the remaining World Cup qualifying matches.

The Committee also decided to strengthen the NFF Technical Department by adding more qualified personnel. Additionally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will undergo an immediate reorganization.

The Nigerian Federation expressed concern over the late arrival of some invited players for the double-header against South Africa and the Republic of Benin.

Despite the camp opening on Saturday, June 1, players such as Alex Iwobi, Maduka Okoye, Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, and Paul Onuachu reported late for international duty.

Even though there was a 38-hour nationwide industrial action by the NLC, the Board was displeased with the poor attitude of some players towards national duty.

The NFF Board unanimously decided to implement a more comprehensive scouting program to identify outstanding Nigeria-eligible players worldwide who can significantly enhance the Super Eagles.

The meeting was attended by key NFF officials, including President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, 1st Vice President Felix Anyansi-Agwu, 2nd Vice President Gbenga Elegbeleye, and several other board members and the Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi.
