Norway and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has decided to withdraw from his national team's squad for the upcoming Nations League matches, citing the need to prioritize his recovery. Odegaard had sustained ankle ligament damage during the September international break, which sidelined him for nearly seven weeks. His recent comeback saw him participate in Arsenal's Champions League match against Inter Milan and a full 90 minutes in their Premier League draw with Chelsea.
Despite initially being excluded from Norway’s roster for their fixtures against Slovenia and Kazakhstan, Odegaard traveled to Oslo for a medical assessment. After consultations with the national team's medical staff, it was determined that he was not fully fit to participate. Odegaard acknowledged that his return to football had been demanding, given his nine-week absence from training, and emphasized the importance of listening to his body to ensure a complete recovery.
Odegaard stressed the necessity of completing his rehabilitation to regain full fitness, highlighting the lingering effects of his injury. Since his return, he has featured in five matches for Arsenal across all competitions this season, but the injury had already caused him to miss 12 games earlier in the campaign. He remains cautious about pushing his recovery too quickly, aiming to regain optimal condition.
Norway, currently leading their Nations League group with seven points from four matches, will be without their influential captain for these crucial games. Odegaard, who has earned 61 caps for his country, has been a key figure since being named the national team captain in 2021, and his absence is expected to be a significant loss for the squad.
