NWFL Wk10: Chukwuamaka's penalty denies Edo Queens away point in Lokoja

Posted : 14 April 2023
Newly crowned Edo FA Cup champions Edo Queens FC of Benin yesterday suffered a 2-1 defeat to Confluence Queens FC of Lokoja in NWFL Wk10.

Africa Sport Network (ASN) reports that the second stanza opener was played at the Lokoja Confluence Stadium, Kogi State.

The game started with free flow style of play from both teams, leading to Martha Peter opening scoring for the home side in 15 minutes of play through a goal mouth scamble when Edo Queens goalkeeper Nkiruka Obidinma, attempt to get hold of a close range shot from the opponent was not good enough.

The tension soaked game  continued with both teams launching series of astonishing attack on each other's goal putting  pressure on the home side.

The pressure paid off later which resulted to an infringement against Confluence Queens defender as  she hacked down  Esther Chioma, at the right flank of the corner kick.

Edo Queens prolific left winger  Rebecca Ajimuda stepped forward to take the sublime free kick that gave the visitors the  leveller to leave the score line at 1-1 at exactly 45th minutes of play.

Both teams resumed the second half  fighting  hard to get a winning goal which did not come until 9 minutes  to regulation time when the host team got a penalty as the ball rolled into the left hand of Edo Queens defender Omowumi Oshobukola, right inside the box.

The centre  referee promptly spotted and awarded the penalty to the host team, while Chukwuamaka Isigwe did not make any mistake in beating Goalkeeper Nkiruka Obidinma to get the winning goal  the  81st minute.

The last impressive run made by Yetunde Fajobi, which would have given  Edo Queens the equalizer after beating goal keeper Echefu Silvia of Confluence Queens was lost due to anxiety.

With this painful loss to Confluence Queens FC,  Edo Queens FC is now 3rd in Group B with 15points from eight matches.

Edo Queens will host the current Group B leaders FC Robo of Lagos at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City Wednesday, March 28.
