NWFL slams Heartland Queens with N1M fine for assault on Match Officials

Posted : 19 April 2025

The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) has imposed a fine of N1 million on Heartland Queens Football Club following an assault on match officials during their Premiership match against Remo Stars Ladies on April 16 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State.

In a statement released on Friday, April 18, the NWFL condemned the actions of both officials and supporters of the club, describing the assault as a serious offense against the principles of fair play and respect for match officials.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the NWFL, Modupe Shabi, stated that the decision followed a thorough review of the match officials' report and an investigation, which confirmed the unruly behavior of individuals associated with the club during Match No. 92 of the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season.

Citing Article 26.1 of its regulations, the NWFL COO emphasized that “any player or official who assaults a match official or any other person during a match, whether through physical, verbal, or any form of body language deemed offensive or against match officials, is liable to a fine of N1,000,000.00 and possible banishment.”

The league body also warned that such offenses could result in a ban of up to one year on the venue where the assault took place.

The NWFL urged Heartland Queens to educate their officials and supporters on the importance of fair play and respect for match officials, noting that the sanction is intended to serve as a deterrent to future misconduct.

This fine comes as the NWFL continues its crackdown on violence and misconduct in the league, reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy for actions that endanger the integrity of the game.
