Edo Queen FC wasted glorious chances on Wednesday to claim the top spot in the Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL) Premiership at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. They drew 0-0 with Bayelsa Queens and ended up with only one point in their first home game of the second stanza of the 2023/24 NWFL premiership.
Within the opening 30 minutes, Goodness Osigwe rattled the opposition defense and provided a goal-bound pass to Osaghae Glory but failed to connect properly with the goal at her mercy.
The plethora of opportunities in the first and second halves of the encounter gave the impression that Edo dominated the game. Instead, the host team allowed the opponents to settle into their stride and gain confidence.
Kudos must be given to Sunday Blessing, who tidied up the defense of Edo Queens, not giving any room for Bayelsa attackers to operate.
In the second half of the game, Edo Queens were more profligate as the strikers failed to convert chances. Miracle Joseph's shot almost put Edo Queens ahead but hit the bar. A Bayelsa Queens defender was there on time to rescue the situation.
Suliat Abideen, Abibat Agbaji, and Mafisere Kafayat saw their efforts blocked as the game maintained its character.
Despite bringing in Eunice Godwin, Peace Abbey, Abibat Agbaji, and Titilayo to add a bit to the game, all efforts made by them to put Edo Queens ahead yielded no results. The game ended without recording a goal. For Bayelsa Queens, they left the pitch singing and dancing for picking a point at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
Coach Domo led Bayelsa Queens should be thankful to their goalkeeper Oyinye Okeke for putting up a brilliant performance.
The host goalkeeper, Ijeoma Ozoma, was also at her best form; she was in total control of her goal mouth. She made a last-minute save for Edo Queens that would have given the visitors an edge over the host.
It was actually an explosive encounter. Both teams gave a good account of themselves as professional players.
Following this 0-0 draw against the 'Prosperity Girls,' Edo Queens still maintain their 3rd position on the log, having the same 13 points as Bayelsa, which goes to show that Edo Queens are still very much in contention for the Super six race.
Although you could see disappointment on the faces of the fans, it is not yet over; there is a strong belief that Edo will not miss out on this year's Super six fiesta.
They will also be traveling to Lagos next week to face FC Robo in matchday 9 of the league.
