The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has announced the second phase of training camps ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, as Team Nigeria's wrestlers have departed Madrid, Spain for Germany, marking their final training camp before the Olympic Games.
During the Spanish Grand Prix, a pre-Olympic tournament in Madrid, Esther Kolawole (62kg) and Christinah Ogunsanya (53kg) won bronze medals for Team Nigeria. Ogunsanya defeated her American counterpart Brianne Gonzales (10-0) to secure the bronze, while Kolawole defeated Sweden's Johanna Lindborg (8-0) for her bronze medal.
Multiple-time world medalist Odunayo Adekuoroye lost (4-4) on technical grounds to Norway's Othile Hole in the quarterfinals. Similarly, African champion Hannah Reuben lost her first bout (0-3) to her Colombian opponent Tatiana R.
Reacting to the team's performance, female head coach Akuh Purity assessed that it was an opportunity for the wrestlers to warm up ahead of the Paris Games.
"It was a good outing for our girls as it allowed us to identify areas we need to improve on," said Purity. "It also provided them with competitive experience, although not at the level of Paris. Overall, it was beneficial, and we now know where we need to focus our efforts."
Before the team departed for Germany on Monday, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Daniel Igali charged the contingent, led by Secretary General Mohammed H. Maigidansanma, to learn from their experiences in Madrid for their technical advantage.
