Ethan Nwaneri joined the Arsenal first team for their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Arsenal's official Instagram account posted photos before kickoff, showing Nwaneri and another academy player, Reuell Walters, with the first team.
While Walters made the bench for his eighteenth call-up, Nwaneri didn't secure a spot in the matchday squad. Despite participating in the final training session before the Nottingham trip, the English-Nigerian attacking midfielder couldn't secure a place.
Nwaneri, the England U17 international of Nigerian descent, hasn't featured for Arsenal's first team since becoming the youngest player in Premier League history at 15 years and 181 days against Brentford on September 18, 2022.
In the current season, the 16-year-old hasn't been used by manager Mikel Arteta in Premier League, Champions League, or FA Cup matches. Despite this, Nwaneri has displayed excellent form in Arsenal's youth teams, scoring eleven goals in ten all-competition appearances, with a notable achievement of five goals in a single game against Crewe Alexandra in the FA Youth Cup.
In contrast, Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi returns to a Premier League matchday squad for the first time since November 12, 2023, but he begins the game on the bench against Arsenal.
