Nwachukwu admits he thought Super Eagles call-up was a joke

Posted : 14 June 2023
Divine Nwachukwu, a rising star in Nigerian football, expressed his surprise and elation upon receiving a text inviting him to join the Super Eagles squad for their June international fixtures.

Among the four home-based players handpicked by coach Jose Peseiro, the 20-year-old Bendel Insurance player received his first-ever call-up to the national team after catching the attention of Peseiro during the NPFL Championship playoffs.

Nwachukwu's exceptional performances in the recently concluded NPFL season, where he scored four goals and provided five assists in 23 games, have earned him recognition and the opportunity to represent his country.

With the Federation Cup still at stake, Nwachukwu is determined to end the season on a high note by lifting the trophy.

Reflecting on his reaction upon receiving the call-up, Nwachukwu shared his amazement during a press interview after a training session: "I feel amazing, what can I say? I am more than happy right now. When I got the text, I thought it was a joke. I feel very amazing and I feel proud of myself and what I have done."

The talented attacking midfielder also discussed the challenges he has faced on his footballing journey, highlighting the ups and downs he experienced while representing the U20 and U23 national teams.

However, his perseverance and standout performances for Bendel Insurance have paid off, earning him the recognition and reward of a call-up to the Super Eagles squad. Nwachukwu expressed his gratitude for the coach's faith in him, stating, "The coach saw me and picked me. It is a plus for me, and I am very happy for that."

If Nwachukwu makes his senior debut against Sierra Leone, he will join an exclusive group of players from the 2019 Golden Eaglets class who have earned a spot in the Super Eagles.

Following in the footsteps of Samson Tijani, currently playing for Red Bull Salzburg, Nwachukwu aims to make a significant impact on the field and contribute to the team's success.

With his unexpected call-up to the national team, Divine Nwachukwu's journey in football takes a significant leap forward, showcasing his talent and potential on a bigger stage.

The Super Eagles camp welcomes this young prospect with open arms, eager to witness his skills and determination as they face Sierra Leone, as he aims to make a lasting impression and further solidify his place in Nigerian football.
