Borussia Dortmund's coach, Nuri Sahin, expressed his admiration for Brendan Rodgers ahead of their Champions League match against Celtic, a team he once played for under Rodgers. Sahin, who took charge at Dortmund in June, briefly worked with Rodgers during the 2012-13 season when he was on loan from Real Madrid.
Although his time at Liverpool was limited to just seven Premier League appearances and he returned to Dortmund amid reported tensions regarding his position on the pitch, Sahin emphasized that there are no lingering grievances between them.
Reflecting on his experiences, Sahin acknowledged the positive impact Rodgers had on his development. "I loved every session with him and found his ideas and way of playing interesting. I jotted down plenty of things for my own career," he stated. Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new role while playing alongside the legendary Steven Gerrard, Sahin maintains a fondness for his time under Rodgers. He added, "When you get a call from Dortmund, and you're a Dortmund boy, you go back home."
Dortmund kicked off their Champions League campaign with a strong 3-0 victory against Club Brugge, marking Sahin's debut in the competition as a coach. In contrast, Celtic have also enjoyed a stellar start to their season, winning all six of their matches and scoring 20 goals while keeping a clean sheet. Their impressive performance continued with a 5-1 triumph over Slovan Bratislava in their opening European fixture.
Sahin is aware of the formidable challenge Celtic poses, noting their unbeaten streak and dominant play in their first Champions League match. "It'll be a challenge for us but also a challenge for them, in our stadium. I don't think it'd be fair to call them an outsider," he remarked, highlighting the mutual competitiveness anticipated in the upcoming encounter.
