NSSFFL: Baptist Academy humbles Bishop Howells Grammar School

Posted : 08 October 2024

As the 3rd edition of the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League kicked off in Lagos, Baptist Girls Academy, Obanikoro, secured the first victory with a 26-6 whitewash of Bishop Howells Secondary School.

The match saw a dominant Baptist Girls team making four successful touchdowns, while Bishop Howells managed a single touchdown.

A touchdown is the act of touching a football to the ground behind an opponent’s goal, specifically scoring six points in American football.

Baptist Girls demonstrated superiority and a better understanding of the game rules throughout the match.

They were awarded two extra points following their successful touchdowns in the first and second quarters of the first half.

Blessing Sunday, team captain for Baptist Girls Academy, said in an interview that the team had prepared well for the match and knew what to do at each stage.

“We won the game because we worked hard for it. We had good runs on the field, made good use of our routes, and had very good ball handling."

“We still intend to train hard to improve our unity, communication, and teamwork for future games,” Sunday said.

Similarly, the Head Coach of Baptist Girls Academy, Oloyede Kayode, expressed pride in his team for securing their first win in the tournament.

“It was a very good game. We dominated and showed a better understanding of the game."

“We played well as a team and got the result that proved our quality over our opponents,” Kayode said.

Likewise, Ejike Favour, the captain of Bishop Howells' girls team, mentioned that her team lost because they were not well-organized.

She noted that being a new game, they were also confused about the rules, but felt confident about doing better in upcoming games.

“We did not play well as a team. We lost our cohesion and allowed many turnovers that our opponents capitalized on."

“We promise to come back stronger because this was an eye-opener for our team,” she said.

In another match, Baptist Boys Academy defeated Bishop Howells Grammar School's boys' team 20-18, clinching their first victory in the league.

The closely contested match saw Baptist Boys Academy come from behind (18-20) with just five minutes remaining to snatch the victory from Bishop Howells.
