NRA axe Referees over poor officiating

Posted : 24 November 2023

The Nigeria (Football) Referees Association (NRA) announced on Friday that it had suspended some referees/assistant referees from all refereeing activities due to poor officiating during NNL24 (MD1) and NWFL-Premiership (MD2).

According to a memo by the NRA, the suspension came after due diligence to the panel of inquiry set up by the body, and the affected officials have been found wanting.

The letter reads:

"Subsequent to glaring arbitrary decisions that have no recourse to any part of the Laws of the Game in view of the incidents that occurred, the under-listed referees/assistant referees are hereby suspended outrightly from all refereeing activities.

They include:

i. Okolosi Isaiah Owohede (ED) - Referee, Smartcity FC vs Edel FC (NNL Matchday 1).
ii. Johnson Ikechukwu R. (RV) - AR1, Giant Brillars vs Ikorodu United (NNL Matchday 1).
iii. Ogben Kindek (CR).
iv. Ayem Joy (BN).

Referee, Bayelsa Queens vs Ekiti Queens (Matchday 2).
Referee, Nasarawa Amazons vs Heartland Queens (NWFL Matchday 2).
Actions displayed by these referees/assistant referees and decisions therefrom are a clear display of impunity, and the NFF Refereeing Development Committee/Department will not tolerate or accommodate such misconduct that brings the game and refereeing generally into disrepute.

All referees and assistant referees in all cadres of the league system are thus warned to avoid placing personal opinions or interests above the dictates of the Laws of the game," the NFF Refereeing Development Committee/Unit said.
