NPFL wields big stick on Enyimba Int'l FC over failure to provide security during league match

Posted : 23 December 2023

The management of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) announced a hefty punishment on Saturday for the defending champions, Enyimba International FC, for breaching NPFL24 Framework and Rules. This breach occurred after they failed to provide adequate security during their Matchday 15 fixture against Rangers in Aba.

Enyimba's failure to provide effective security resulted in unauthorized persons gaining access to the match officials' dressing room, which is considered a restricted area.

Furthermore, Enyimba breached the rule book when their fans and officials harassed the match officials in their dressing room, an act capable of bringing the game into disrepute.

Enyimba failed to ensure the proper conduct of their officials, leading to the harassment and intimidation of the referee after the match.

Enyimba was fined the sum of N1 million for failing to provide general security and also for not preventing unauthorized persons from gaining access to restricted areas.

The champions have been additionally fined N1 million for misconduct and failure to ensure the proper conduct of their officials.

Enyimba's official, Okey Nwabeke, is also suspended from all NPFL24 activities for the next three match weeks for inciting and unsporting conduct.

Enyimba faces the risk of heavier sanctions in the future if the club and any of their officials are involved in similar misconduct.

The Aba-based club has 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.
