NPFL Mgt. promises stable calendar for league

Posted : 26 February 2024

The chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye, has stated that the board is committed to maintaining a stable league calendar.

Elegbeleye emphasized that a stable calendar is essential for proper planning, and he assured that the league board will do everything within its power to rectify it starting from this season and ensure stability.

"A lot of factors militate against a stable calendar, and we will ensure that the matches and dates are fixed to avoid an unstable calendar," he assured.

The NPFL supremo highlighted that a stable calendar would aid Nigerian teams in preparing well for the season. He mentioned, "The period of break and pre-season will be clearly stated. We're going to avoid the issue of players leaving when the season is on. This will also help our teams prepare adequately for African continental matches as they would have played matches in the league before the continental matches start."

Regarding the second round of the league, Elegbeleye stated that all eyes would be on all centers to ensure that the league produces a true champion.

He expressed satisfaction with the teams' performances so far, and he believes that the number of away victories can improve with their resolve to create a better league.

Concerning the ongoing NPFL under-17 youth league, Hon Elegbeleye stated that it has come to stay. A manual pool of a database for all the players has been created, containing detailed information about the participants from the zones to the group stage, playoff, and the championship proper.

Data such as passport photographs, National Identification Number (NIN) or International Passport, playing positions, and clubs of the players are documented. This information will facilitate easy reference and continuity. Elegbeleye believes that the clubs and Nigeria as a whole stand to benefit significantly from these sporting criteria of club licensing requirements.
