South South Zonal Champion, Rivers United, and North Central Champion Plateau United commence their quest in the maiden edition of the Under-17 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, on a winning note to top the league table. The Rivers United lads were too strong for the talented Remo kids, as they thrashed them 3-1 to top the youth league. Plateau United narrowly defeated hard-fighting Katsina United 2-1.
Katsina United will face South East Champions Rangers International by 2 p.m. at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where the youth league is being hosted by the Edo state government. Rangers wonder kid Igwelo Chimobi, who signed a 3-year professional contract with the Enugu giant, will be one exciting player the Northern Warriors need to watch out for after his super display in the South East Zonal elimination.
While both Rivers and Plateau United will struggle it out by 4 p.m. to determine who will lead the table, The chairman of the youth league, Emeka Inyama, urged football administrators and Nigerians to support and take the league seriously, as it is the future of Nigerian football. Inyama, the former chairman of the Abia Warriors, also thanked Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, chairman of the NPFL board, for giving him the opportunity to contribute to Nigerian football once again.
