NPFL AGM jettisons Abridged League format for full format amidst economic concerns

Posted : 17 July 2024

Amidst certain calls for an abridged format for the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) due to unfavorable economic conditions, NPFL club owners at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja have opted for a league to be played in a full-season format of 38 matches.

It was initially feared they would settle for the abridged league format owing to the challenging economy and difficult times, but the AGM ultimately decided on a full season of 38 games after much deliberation.

The NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, commended the league's administrators for last season's success and urged them to seek sponsors to generate more revenue for the league and clubs, which would also help ease the exodus of players.

"I want to express my appreciation to the board of the NPFL for a job well done. I also want to thank GTI for their support.

"But the NPFL should do more to attract sponsors to bring in more money. When more money comes in, the clubs will also have more resources.

"The issue of our players leaving the league must stop. If clubs receive more money to pay players well, they won’t feel the need to play in any African country.

"They will stop moving away to play in Sudan or Tanzania. When there is more money for the clubs, it will prevent players from seeking opportunities in Benin Republic as well."

“Let us holistically assess where we were, where we are now, and how the NFF can support you to improve. We will do our best to continue enhancing the standard of the league.

“Last season, we faced challenges with fixtures. We must keep the fixtures consistent. You shouldn’t make the fixtures public until everything is in order. We must adhere to the schedule. There should be no accumulated fixtures again, and no postponements of matches.

“We must stick to the fixtures from the beginning to the end of the season. When drawing up the fixtures, you must take into account other competitions, such as the Federation Cup. With your cooperation, we can achieve this. By the grace of God, we will make significant changes."
