Nottingham Forest striker Awoniyi withdraws from Nigeria squad to face Saudi
Posted : 08 October 2023
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has decided to withdraw from the Super Eagles squad scheduled to participate in upcoming friendly matches against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.
This decision comes as a result of a significant injury he recently sustained, making it unfeasible for him to join the team in Portugal next week.
Awoniyi, a former winner of the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup, was sidelined due to a groin injury during Nottingham Forest's previous game against Brentford, a condition that will likely keep him out of action for at least a month.
His absence poses a challenge for the Nigerian team, as they already grapple with fitness concerns involving other key players, including Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Jordan Torunarigha.
Despite this setback, the Super Eagles are gearing up to face Saudi Arabia's Green Falcons on October 13th, 2023, in Portimão, Portugal, followed by a match against Mozambique's Mambas in the same city three days later.
