Nottingham Forest Striker, Awoniyi engages in philanthropy gesture in Ilorin

Posted : 05 July 2023

Super Eagles attacker, Taiwo Awoniyi gives back to the society after he expressed desire to expand reconstruction works at the Government Day Secondary School, (GDSS), Egbijila, Ilorin.

His gesture follows outcry from hapless community in the area over the shocking state of the school infrastructure, making the place a haven for miscreants.

The Nottingham FC star want to hand over a fully equipped cottage hospital he built from the scratch in Olla, another community in Ifelodun Local Government, Kwara State, to local administrators.

The Egbejila School project involves complementary re-plastering and refurbishment of the classrooms, complete with steel reinforced doors and windows to debar miscreants from gaining access into the school classes to engage in vices.

The school, despite several outcries to authorities including police, NDLEA and state government officials had, until the renovations began, been a haven for local distribution of narcotics like crack, hemp and other illicit hallucinogenic substances.

The school's authority recently found two cellophane bags (poly-bags) of hemp in one of the classes which was reported to both police and the Ministry of Education with no response coming.

"We have reported series of rape incidents happening in the school; people are routinely mugged and attacked in the vicinity all because the school with its shocking dilapidation got no response from the state government," explained a grateful parent and member of the school's PTA.

But a calm Awoniyi says that the school's project has to be expanded.

"I had intended it to be just one or two classes but what I saw when I visited the place left me completely dumbfounded. No child should learn under such conditions," he said.

Aside from these projects, the soccer star built a dressing room for his Unicorn Academy, where he was trained as a boy.

At the UITH, he visited sick inmates paying their hospital bills.

Awoniyi attended his secondary education at the Government Day Secondary School, Egbejila.
