Nottingham Forest manager provides latest news on Awoniyi's condition

Posted : 17 August 2023
After his impactful substitute appearance against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest's manager, Steve Cooper, has provided insight into the potential starting status of Taiwo Awoniyi for the upcoming weekend.

Awoniyi, the 26-year-old Nigerian striker, entered the match and capitalized on an assist from Antony Elanga, who had executed a brilliant run to set up the goal.

Cooper had initially held Awoniyi out of the starting lineup due to his ongoing recovery from an ankle injury sustained during preseason, allowing him only a limited playing time of around fifteen to twenty minutes.

While Awoniyi's fitness is improving, he hasn't reached full readiness yet. Addressing the injury status of both Awoniyi and Senegalese player Moussa Niakhaté in a pre-match conference before facing Sheffield United, Cooper explained that both players have been gradually regaining match fitness through various means.

Cooper described the decision to introduce Awoniyi during the Arsenal game as a calculated risk based on the available opportunity.

Cooper continued by expressing that the players' recovery progress is positive, though their injuries were untimely and unfortunate.

Despite their availability to play, they are not ready for extended minutes on the field at this point.

Cooper concluded that while both players are on a path toward full fitness, they are not quite prepared to start games yet.

As Nottingham Forest prepares to take on Sheffield United at The City Ground, the team aims to secure a victory and claim all three points on Friday evening.
