Nasarawa United FC suffered a 2-0 defeat in a pre-season friendly against regional rivals Lobi Stars FC at the Divine Mercy Minor Seminary in Makurdi, Benue State. The match showcased a mix of new and old players for Lobi Stars as Coach Usman Adams used the opportunity to test his squad’s adaptability to the team's style and traditions.
The game saw Lobi Stars take an early lead when Stanley Ogabo’s cross inadvertently struck the shin of former Shooting Stars player Uche Odeh, resulting in an own goal. Despite some decent chances for Nasarawa United, including missed opportunities by Nzediegwu Nonso and Victor Agwaronye, they could not capitalize on their scoring chances. Lobi Stars' goalkeeper, Akor Itodo, also made key saves to deny further attempts.
In the second half, Nasarawa United’s defense, featuring players like Femi Solomon, Kabiru Balogun, and Agbekpornu Desmond, managed to hold off Lobi Stars for a significant period. However, a late goal by Seun Oluwatoba, following a poor clearance, sealed the victory for Lobi Stars. United’s appeal for a penalty was dismissed by the referee, and despite late pressure, they could not change the outcome.
The match was well-received by stakeholders from both teams, including representatives from Nasarawa State and Lobi Stars' management. The two teams are scheduled to meet again for the return leg at the Lafia City Stadium on August 9, 2024, before both participate in the Abuja Unity Pre-season Tournament starting on August 11, 2024.
