Nasarawa United FC bounced back from a 0-2 defeat to regional rivals Lobi Stars in Makurdi by securing a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture held at Lafia City Stadium.
Coach Usman Adams made several changes to the squad that faced Lobi Stars in the previous match, featuring more established players in the first half. Despite dominating the game, the home side was unable to score in the first 45 minutes, with Lobi's attempts thwarted by the hosts' defense.
In the second half, Nasarawa United intensified their attack. They thought they had taken the lead in the 55th minute when left-back John Tsekaa scored, but his goal was disallowed by the referee for an infringement. Nine minutes later, captain King Osanga, who had come on as a substitute, delivered a precise pass to Kabiru Balogun on the right. Balogun then provided an inch-perfect cross to Ebenezer Odeyemi, who flicked the ball past Lobi's goalkeeper, Akor Itodo, to give United the lead.
Lobi's set-piece attempt near the edge of the box in the closing stages was blocked by the tight defense. Two minutes after the end of regulation time, Nasarawa United won a free-kick, which Kabiru Balogun converted by placing the ball beyond the reach of Akor Itodo from 25 meters out, sealing the victory.
The final score in Lafia was 2-0 in favor of the Solid Miners. They will now proceed to Abuja, where they are placed alongside Like Minds FC, Atlantic Integral FC, Ejike Ugboaja FC, and CKD FC in Group 'A' of the 3rd edition of the Abuja Unity Pre-season Tournament. United's first match in the competition is scheduled for Monday, August 12, 2024, against Ejike Ugboaja FC at 4 p.m.
The Solid Miners were runners-up in last year's pre-season tournament, losing 2-4 to EFCC in the final on October 29, 2022, after the match ended 1-1 in regular time.
