Middlesbrough is making efforts to persuade Chuba Akpom, an Arsenal youth product from Hale End Academy, to extend his stay at the club beyond this summer.
Despite not featuring in the team's pre-season games and being absent from the training camp squad to Portugal, it is not related to transfer speculation surrounding him.
Akpom, who is 27 years old, has been recovering from a knee injury sustained in the last game of the previous season against Coventry City, which has kept him out of pre-season activities with the group.
As of now, Middlesbrough has not received any official offers for Akpom, but the striker is garnering interest from several Premier League and European clubs.
With less than a year left on his contract, the club faces a crucial decision regarding his future - whether to sell him and capitalize on his value or allow him to see out his contract if he doesn't sign a new deal.
Middlesbrough's management is actively engaged in negotiations with Akpom's representatives for a new contract, although no agreement has been reached yet.
In the 2022-2023 season, Akpom had a breakthrough performance, impressively scoring 28 goals in 38 appearances in the Championship, leading the division's scoring charts.
His outstanding form earned him several accolades, including the Championship Player of the Season at the EFL awards, as well as Middlesbrough's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year honors.
As Akpom's future remains uncertain, both the club and the player are closely considering their options, with the hope of reaching a decision that benefits all parties involved.
