Ekiti United FC overpowered FC Ebedei on Sunday in the Nigeria National League week 8 fixtures, which were decided at the home ground of FC Ebedei in Abeokuta. The two teams, being familiar foes, came out with determination to outshine each other, having earlier met twice in recent weeks.
On the two occasions when both teams met, Ekiti United triumphed by beating FC Ebedei in the Federation Cup and in the first stanza of the NNL, which were both decided in Ado Ekiti, the home ground of Ekiti United.
On Sunday, FC Ebedei needed to prove that the double defeat against Ekiti United could be overturned, while Ekiti United, led by coach Kehinde Anjorin, also wanted to prove that the two victories were no fluke.
Two early goals in the first half from both teams brought fans and spectators to the edge of their seats as visiting Ekiti United drew the first blood.
Former Insurance of Benin striker, now in the colours of Ekiti United, Ofoni Wadulu volleyed the ball above the helpless FC Ebedei goalkeeper to open the score sheet after connecting a pass from Sodiq Umar, who earlier got a pass from Seyi Akinwumi.
The home team fought back and struggled to get an equalizer, which also came in the first half after a seemingly rough move on the Ekiti United goalkeeper forced him to drop the ball inside the six-yard box.
The first half ended with 1 goal apiece, and some substitutions were made in the second half as Abidogun came in for Pius Chikodi, Achibogu Mathew came in for Bolu Ariyo, Haruna Abutu came in for Olaoluwa, and George made way for Segun Ajengele, who also came in as the fourth substitute.
The substitutions paid off, as all onslaughts and incursions from the home team were curtailed by the effective midfield and backline.
Just as Sodiq Umar had a hand in the first goal, the striker also exhibited quality team spirit by laying the pass again for Wadulu, whose brilliant effort sailed into the net of FC Ebedei, and Ekiti United sealed a vital away victory to brighten their chances of qualifying for the prestigious NNL Super 8.
Ekiti United, now with 13 points, will return home to host Madiba FC in Ado Ekiti on Saturday. Madiba FC lost to Abeokuta Stormers, thereby opening the number 1 position to any of the consistent teams in the group.
