Nigerian league drops off Africa’s Top 10 Leagues

Posted : 20 January 2025

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has experienced another setback, now ranking 13th among Africa’s football leagues after falling out of the top 10, according to the latest rankings.

This decline has significant implications for Nigerian football. Clubs in the country have lost their privilege to present four teams in CAF competitions.

Previously, the NPFL was allocated two teams in the CAF Champions League and two in the CAF Confederation Cup. With the new rankings, only two teams will now represent Nigeria: the league champions and the winners of the President's Federation Cup.

Egypt currently tops the rankings, with Morocco and Algeria occupying the second and third positions. South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) ranks fourth, while Tunisia completes the top five.

North African countries continue to dominate the top tier of African football.

The NPFL’s slump raises concerns about the state of Nigerian football and its ability to compete with Africa’s best. If corrective measures are not taken, the league risks further decline on the continental stage.
