AC Milan, Genoa, and Cagliari, the renowned Italian Serie A clubs, have faced a setback in their pursuit of Nigerian rising star Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi.
The 21-year-old forward gained significant attention due to his outstanding performances in the recently concluded season, where he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 32 games for NK Celje, propelling the team to a commendable second-place finish in the Slovenian PrvaLiga.
Initially, it was reported that AC Milan, Genoa, and Cagliari were all keen on acquiring the talented youngster, captivated by his strength and prowess on the field.
Joining fellow Nigerian players Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in the prestigious Italian top flight would have been a dream come true for Ikwuemesi.
However, it appears that his aspirations will have to be put on hold for now. According to reports from TMW, Riga FC, a three-time champion in Latvia, has emerged as the frontrunner in securing Ikwuemesi's signature. It is believed that the player and the Latvian club are in the final stages of reaching a deal.
Meanwhile, AC Milan has shifted their focus to another Nigerian winger, Samuel Chukwueze from Villarreal.
Negotiations between the Italian giants and the Spanish club are currently ongoing, although a resolution has yet to be reached. AC Milan may hesitate to meet Villarreal's demanding asking price for Chukwueze, prompting them to explore alternative options.
While the Chukwueze deal remains uncertain, AC Milan is proactively preparing a contingency plan, considering a potential "plan B" should the desired transfer fail to materialize.
The club remains determined to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season, actively seeking talented reinforcements through various avenues.
