A Nigerian football official has advised Stanley Nwabali against returning to Chippa United and South Africa. The official issued a cryptic warning via the media, and it remains unclear what advice others have given the Super Eagles goalkeeper. Nwabali is scheduled to return to Chippa United soon, and failure to report could result in serious sanctions, despite public backing from Chippa chairman Siviwe Mpengesi.
Respected Nigerian football figure Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam, a former vice-president of CAF’s Appeal Committee, suggests that Nwabali should go back to his native country. Amid reports of threats against Nwabali, Uchegbulam advises him to refrain from returning to Chippa United after the AFCON, following his notable performance against Bafana Bafana.
“The feelers I’m getting from South Africa regarding Nwabali are not encouraging, and I want to advise that he should not go back to Chippa United after the AFCON,” Uchegbulam stated. He suggests that, if possible, Nwabali should train with top Nigerian clubs like Enyimba United or Rivers United before seeking a new club. Chippa United is unlikely to release the player from his contract without significant compensation.
Despite the advice, Nwabali seems to have received encouragement to go AWOL. He gained high praise for his AFCON performances and has reportedly attracted interest from abroad, with Kaizer Chiefs tracking him before the tournament.
