Nigeria XI vs Rwanda: Boniface starts ahead of Osimhen

Posted : 10 September 2024

The Super Eagles’ lineup for their upcoming match against Rwanda has been officially announced. Nigeria will face Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, marking the second matchday of the qualifying rounds for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

For this fixture, interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has made a notable adjustment from the squad that secured a win against Benin on Saturday. Lazio’s Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is set to start in the attacking midfield role, taking the place of Fulham’s Alex Iwobi.

In goal, Stanley Nwabali will continue as the first-choice goalkeeper, supported by the central defensive trio of team captain William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey. Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi will maintain their positions as right and left wingbacks, respectively. Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi will continue their roles in midfield.

A surprising decision sees Victor Osimhen placed on the bench despite his impressive performance as a substitute against Benin. Osimhen scored Nigeria’s second goal just six minutes after coming on. Instead, Eguavoen has chosen Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface to lead the attack, replicating his role from the previous match.

Ademola Lookman, who was instrumental in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over the Cheetahs with two goals, will flank Boniface on the left wing. AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze will provide support on the right wing. Lookman will be eager to continue his goal-scoring form at the Amahoro Stadium.

Historically, Nigeria has performed well against Rwanda, with five meetings resulting in two wins and three draws for the Super Eagles. The team’s strong record against Rwanda adds to the anticipation of this encounter.

Nigeria’s starting lineup for the match against Rwanda is as follows: Nwabali; Ajayi, Troost-Ekong, Bassey; Aina, Ndidi, Dele-Bashiru, Onyemaechi; Chukwueze, Boniface, Lookman.
