Nigeria Women’s Football League set to introduce ground-breaking structure at AGA

Posted : 03 October 2023
Ahead of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) season, the league board is set to introduce a new structure for the women’s domestic leagues.

The three league cadres (NWFL Premiership, Championship, and Nationwide) will witness a ground-breaking change in their structures.

The NWFL Communication Department notified that the league organisers had introduced, subject to ratification at the Annual General Assembly, a ground-breaking 3-league structure.

The 3-league structure of 216 Clubs will comprise 16 Premiership (top flight), 20 Championship (second tier), and 180 States League clubs, (up from the previous arrangements).

The previous league structure comprised 36 clubs – Premiership: 14; Championship: 12; Nationwide (now States Leagues): 10 clubs.

This tier-system according to the league is a strategic move that offers players the opportunity to nurture and refine their skills at various levels, thus fostering a robust pipeline of talent for the future.

This immediate expansion will ensure that over the season, about 820 matches will be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, every week; keeping over 7,000 players, coaches, and officials fully engaged.

The NWFL Chairperson, Nkechi Obi upon assumption of office has been embarking on a tour to States meeting with stakeholders ahead of the Annual General Assembly slated for this month.

The Annual General Assembly will herald the kick-off of the new campaign in November.
