Nigeria Secures Quarter-Final Spot in U-17 Women's World Cup

In a thrilling Matchday five of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, the USA and Ecuador secured their places in the quarter-finals with impressive victories over Korea Republic and New Zealand, respectively. The USA showcased their dominance with a resounding 5-0 win, led by Mel Barcenas, who scored twice and provided an assist. Meanwhile, Ecuador triumphed with a 4-0 victory, highlighted by Caprice Chiuchiolo’s two stunning goals, demonstrating their readiness for the knockout stage. The day also saw Nigeria and Spain solidify their positions at the top of Groups A and B, setting the stage for an exciting quarter-final lineup.

 

The quarter-finals will feature a rematch between Nigeria and the USA, harking back to their previous encounter in the 2022 tournament, where Nigeria emerged victorious. Spain will face Ecuador, marking the latter's first appearance in the knockout rounds of the World Cup. Tuesday's matches saw Korea Republic, New Zealand, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic eliminated from the tournament. Despite their exit, the Dominican Republic achieved a record attendance for a national team match, with 13,535 fans supporting them against Nigeria.

 

In Group A, Ecuador's victory against New Zealand was characterized by strong performances from their key players, especially Chiuchiolo, who not only scored two goals but also demonstrated exceptional skill throughout the match. Domenica Arboleda opened the scoring, and Dariana Moran capped off the match with another goal. For New Zealand, despite the defeat, defender Alyssha Eglinton expressed pride in her team's effort and resilience.

 

In a closely contested match, Nigeria defeated the Dominican Republic 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Shakirat Moshood, which sealed their perfect group phase record. Dominican goalkeeper Jaylene Rondon delivered a stellar performance, making numerous saves to keep her team in the game until the final moments. Both teams reflected on their experiences, with Nigeria celebrating their progression and the Dominican Republic taking pride in their historic participation in the tournament.

 

In Group B, Spain came from behind to defeat Colombia 2-1, securing their spot as group winners. Amaya Garcia and Iris Ashley Santiago scored the crucial goals for Spain, overcoming an early strike from Colombia's Isabella Diaz. The Spanish side demonstrated resilience and skill, ensuring their place in the quarter-finals as they aim to advance further in the competition.
