Nigeria’s Okoronkwo moves from China to AFC Toronto

Posted : 25 February 2025

Esther Okoronkwo has officially joined AFC Toronto as the club prepares for its first season in the Northern Super League (NSL). The Canadian club confirmed her signing through a statement on its official website.

The 27-year-old Nigerian international arrives from Changchun Dazhong, a club in the Chinese Women’s Super League, marking a new chapter in her career. Her experience across multiple leagues makes her a valuable addition to AFC Toronto’s squad.

Before her move to China, Okoronkwo had stints in France and Spain, playing for AS Saint-Étienne and UDG Tenerife. She has also represented Nigeria on the international stage, competing in major tournaments such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Olympics.

AFC Toronto’s Sporting Director, Billy Wilson, expressed his excitement about the signing, praising Okoronkwo’s technical skills and versatility. He described her as a player capable of making a significant impact on the team’s success.

Okoronkwo made her debut for the Super Falcons in 2021 and quickly became a key player. She scored her first international goal in a crucial WAFCON qualifier against Ivory Coast, helping Nigeria secure a spot in the tournament. She also played a role in Nigeria’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.

During the tournament, she featured in matches against Canada and Australia, contributing to Nigeria’s impressive run to the Round of 16. She later earned a call-up for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Nigeria faced Brazil, Spain, and Japan.

Now set for a new challenge in Canada, Okoronkwo expressed her excitement about joining AFC Toronto. She looks forward to contributing to the team’s success and playing in a league that aims to elevate women’s football in North America.
