"Nigeria's talented forward, Amy Okonkwo, is brimming with excitement upon learning that D'Tigress is set to face formidable opponents—Senegal, Team USA, and Belgium—in Tenerife next February during the highly anticipated FIBA Women's Olympics Qualifying Tournament (WOQT). She exudes confidence despite the challenging competition, emphasizing Nigeria's strategic approach of taking each game as it comes in their quest for a coveted spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"My immediate reaction was filled with anticipation for what promises to be an exciting and challenging tournament. We are well aware of the toughness ahead, but it's a great opportunity for us as a team to showcase our resilience and determination. Expect us to fight passionately and strive to clinch victory in as many games as possible. We are a young, dynamic group with immense potential, and I anticipate seeing that potential unfold on the court," expressed Okonkwo in an interview with FIBA.basketball.
As the reigning FIBA Women's AfroBasket Most Valuable Player, Okonkwo firmly believes that Nigeria, being the reigning African champions, possesses the talent and ability to excel in the Qualifiers. She looks forward to participating in her second Olympic Games, building on her valuable experience from Tokyo 2020. Okonkwo, previously associated with the French side Saint-Amand Hainaut Basket, emphasized, "This would mark my second Olympic journey. It means everything to me to represent Nigeria on the international stage. I have a deep love for this team, and I will exert all my efforts to guide us back to that prestigious platform."
Reflecting on Nigeria's WOQT opponents, Okonkwo anticipates a tough challenge. "I approach every game with the same mindset and enthusiasm, relishing the challenge that lies ahead. I eagerly await the vibrant atmosphere in Belgium. Our approach is grounded in respect for our opponents, as they are a formidable team. I anticipate them giving their best, and we will do the same."
In terms of her teammates, Okonkwo expects them to be fully prepared for action. "I call upon them to channel the same energy and determination that we displayed in Afrobasket and to dig even deeper, giving it their all."
Okonkwo played a pivotal role in securing Nigeria's victory in the 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket, their fourth consecutive win. This outstanding performance earned her the title of Most Valuable Player and she was a key figure in the All-Tournament Team. Throughout Nigeria's unbeaten run (5-0) in the Rwandan capital of Kigali, Okonkwo emerged as the heart and soul of the Nigerian team, averaging an impressive team-high of 17.2 points and contributing 8.2 rebounds per game. Her passion and dedication remain unwavering, and there's no sign of her slowing down."
