Nigeria, other African countries, to earn more at CHAN 2024

Nigeria’s quest for its first-ever African Nations Championship (CHAN) trophy may have received a boost after CAF announced increased prize money for the 2024 tournament.


According to the continent’s football governing body, the winners of the upcoming tournament in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will pocket $3.5 million, a 75% increase from the previous amount.


CAF also announced that the total prize money for the 2024 CHAN in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda has been increased to USD 10.4 million, a 32% increase.


The President of CAF, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, said: “We are excited about the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2024.


"The CHAN is an important competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players and talented young players, and it will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of African football and CAF competitions.


This competition is part of our strategy to invest in African football and make it appealing and attractive to football fans, TV viewers, sponsors, partners, and other stakeholders in Africa and worldwide."


The closest Nigeria’s Super Eagles B have come to winning the championship was in 2018 when Coach Salisu Yusuf’s side collapsed 0-4 in the final against hosts Morocco.


Prior to the silver medal effort, the Nigerian team, under the late Stephen Keshi, won a bronze medal in the 2014 edition.


The current Eagles resumed camp in Ikenne, Ogun State, today after defeating Ghana’s Black Galaxies 3-1 over two legs to qualify.


The technical crew of the Nigerian team, led by Coach Daniel Ogunmodede, appears to have secured the confidence of teeming football fans back home, aiming to go one step further than the 2018 squad.


Joining Nigeria at CHAN 2024 are 16 other qualifiers:


They are Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar.


Two additional countries will also participate in the CHAN after qualifying from remaining matches.


The 2024 tournament will kick off from February 1st to 28th.
