Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has committed to ensuring that Victor Osimhen joins Chelsea. In a recent episode of The Obi One Podcast, Mikel shared insights into the behind-the-scenes efforts to secure Osimhen's transfer, which ultimately fell through.
Mikel emphasized his determination, stating, “I’m not going to rest until I get him to the club. It’s not just because he’s a friend or a fellow Nigerian, but because he is among the top strikers globally and Africa’s finest player. I understand the immense value he would bring to Chelsea, and I’m confident that many Chelsea fans recognize that too.”
Addressing criticisms aimed at Osimhen, Mikel dismissed claims of greed as unfounded. He explained, “Victor has faced a lot of criticism, but people aren’t fully aware of the situation. He genuinely wanted to join the club and made significant compromises regarding salary and other terms. There were just a few minor details that prevented the deal from being finalized.”
Mikel elaborated on the challenges faced during the negotiations, saying, “Both sides were willing to make concessions. The issues were mainly related to paperwork, medicals, and other minor aspects that couldn’t be resolved in time.”
He praised Chelsea for their effort and ambition, acknowledging, “Chelsea played their part in trying to get the deal done, and I appreciate their ambition. On Victor’s side, it was clear how much he wanted to join the club.”
Reflecting on the failed transfer, Mikel shared his conversation with Osimhen after the window closed. “I told him to stay focused, continue working hard, and not get discouraged. It’s a tough situation, but I believe in his strength.”
Mikel highlighted Osimhen’s potential impact, comparing him to renowned strikers like Didier Drogba and Diego Costa. “Victor possesses the qualities we’re missing at the club—an edge and the ability to intimidate defenders. His presence would have been a valuable addition,” Mikel concluded.
Chelsea made a late push to sign Osimhen during the final stages of the summer transfer window, but the move did not materialize. Osimhen had previously turned down an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, despite Napoli accepting their €80 million bid.
