NFF washes hands off Peseiro's choice of goalkeeper

Posted : 16 November 2023
The Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, stated on Wednesday that the football ruling body in Nigeria will not influence the choice of the goalkeeper for the Super Eagles in the World Cup qualifier games. Olajire made this declaration during an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the 10th Nigeria Pitch Awards media briefing held at Lagos Travel Inn, Toyin Street, Ikeja Lagos. The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to commence the 2022 FIFA World Cup against the Crocodiles of Lesotho and Zimbabwe on Thursday, Nov. 16, and Nov. 19. Nigeria will face Lesotho at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Thursday at 5 p.m, then travel to Butare in Rwanda to play against the Warriors of Zimbabwe in a Day 2 encounter on Sunday.

Addressing concerns raised by pundits regarding the underwhelming performances of the Eagles' goalkeepers, Olajire emphasized that Peseiro would be in the best position to determine the goalkeeper and not the NFF. "The choice of the goalkeeper still rests with the Super Eagles coach and not the NFF; nobody has a say on who will man the post but Peseiro. The coach, Peseiro, will choose among the three goalkeepers he has in the camp as his preferred choice and the one he thinks will do the job. Everybody can have their opinion, but the coach will have the final say. For us, everything is set for the battle in Uyo, and the players themselves know its importance having missed the last World Cup; they are ready for this one," he said.

Regarding expectations from the Super Eagles' stand-in striker in the absence of the injured Napoli FC striker Victor Osimhen, former Eagles player Etim Esin expressed confidence in Victor Boniface to take up the challenge. "I am rooting for Victor Boniface to do the job; this is his time to shine and take up the responsibility in the absence of Osimhen. This is his opportunity because it will not come again. Victor Boniface has been scoring goals for his club in Germany; he needs to replicate that now. We should have faith in him to do the best job because we all know the pedigree of Osimhen; he is a formidable front man. Boniface needs to prove himself as well," he said.
