The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has spoken about the early preparations for the nation's senior women's team, the Super Falcons, ahead of the 2025 Africa Women's Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will be held in Morocco.
The delayed CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is just six months away. Gusau assured that the senior women’s football team will receive adequate preparations to compete for the ultimate trophy.
Africa’s biggest women’s football competition, which did not take place last year due to the tight football calendar of CAF, will now occur from July 5 to 26, 2025, in Morocco, where Nigeria finished outside the medal bracket in the last edition.
The NFF president promised that the Super Falcons would be prepared in the best way possible in order to reclaim the African title that Nigeria has won 11 times in the past, including back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2018.
Gusau disclosed that the NFF will ensure the Super Falcons are well-prepared for the upcoming WAFCON in Morocco, emphasizing that the team will receive adequate preparations ahead of the competition.
"I just want to assure everyone that we (NFF) will make sure we give the team the adequate preparations they deserve within the available resources. We are not going to take any chances,” he stated.
The NFF president also revealed that the NFF Executive Committee will ensure the Super Falcons utilize the 2025 FIFA Women’s International Match Windows to prepare adequately for the WAFCON final in Morocco in July.
“It is our desire at the NFF to see the Super Falcons win the WAFCON trophy again. We will make sure that the team is adequately prepared for the challenge ahead. We are aware of the 2025 FIFA International Women’s Match Calendar, and we will utilize the International Match Windows.
“For this reason, the NFF will organize international friendly matches for the team within the available resources to test the players’ readiness for the task ahead. We’ll support the team to do well in Morocco.”
There are eight windows for FIFA international friendly matches before the WAFCON final in Morocco, starting from February to June 2025, just before the WAFCON kicks off.
A closer look at the 2025 FIFA Women’s International Match Calendar reveals that three international friendlies will be played from February 17 to 26, 2025; two matches from March 31 to April 8, 2025; and two matches from May 26 to June 3, 2025, exactly one month before the WAFCON kicks off in Morocco.
Significantly, the delayed WAFCON, scheduled for Morocco this year, falls within the 2025 FIFA Women’s International Match Calendar. It will take place from July 5 to 26, 2025.
This is the same period during which the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 will take place from July 2 to 27 in Switzerland, while the 2025 Copa América Femenina will be held from July 12 to August 2, 2025, in Ecuador.
