The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has promised that the widely adopted Video Assistant Referee (VAR) used in advanced leagues and countries will be introduced to Nigerian leagues before the expiration of his tenure as president.
Gusau, who gave the assurance during the maiden retreat of the management and staff of the NPFL in Abuja, stated that plans are underway to make it happen.
He mentioned that plans were in progress to sponsor some Nigerian referees abroad for training, especially in countries where VAR is in full use, to replicate and implement similar structures in Nigeria.
“I can assure you that VAR will be effectively put into use in our domestic football before the end of my first tenure as president of the Nigeria Football Federation in 2026. It will be gradual, but we will surely get there,” Gusau stated.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) is a system that helps referees make better decisions about player fouls, the validity of goals, and red card decisions in soccer matches.
