The Nigeria Football Federation has revealed the reason behind its decision to appoint Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Finidi was announced as Jose Peseiro’s successor last week.
The Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ademola Olajire, said the 53-year-old’s impressive track record and experience of working with Peseiro made him a standout choice for the job.
“I'm not a member of the Technical Committee, but I can also see a lot of positives about Finidi George,” Olajire told Hotsports.
“Finidi George was not only a great football player; he has prepared himself very well and has done himself no harm with the laurels he has been able to acquire in his short period as a coach.
“He had the option of staying in Spain and taking up a position with a second-tier club, but he chose to return to Nigeria and start with an NPFL club.
“He started with Enyimba. In his second season, he won the league title. It is not easy to win the league title, so we must commend him for that. Looking at the standings now, this is his third season with the team, and with four matches to go, he is well on his way to retaining the title.
“That is no small feat and it shows that this is a man who knows what he's doing.
“As for the Super Eagles, he worked for twenty months as an assistant under Jose Peseiro, which gives him a head start over anyone else. He worked closely with the team, was with the team when they qualified for the AFCON, and finished as runners-up at the AFCON.
“It is natural that someone of this stature, someone who has accomplished these things and who has been very close to the team, gets the nod, especially considering that we have only five weeks until very important matches.”
