NFF dismisses Libya captain’s poor treatment claims

Posted : 10 October 2024

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied allegations by Faisal Al-Badri, captain of the Libya senior men’s national team, of poor treatment upon their arrival in Nigeria.

The NFF clarified on Thursday that the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) was responsible for the logistical issues that affected the Mediterranean Knights.

Emmanuel Ayanbunmi, the NFF’s Assistant Director of Protocol, stated that the LFF only notified them of their arrival in Port Harcourt, rather than in Uyo, three hours before the team landed on Tuesday.

“I had an extended conversation with the General Secretary of the LFF on Monday, October 7th, and at no point did he mention that the team would arrive the next day. He said he would follow up, but he never did. Later, on Monday evening, an advance party from the LFF contacted me and mentioned that the team would be arriving by noon on Tuesday. We made all necessary arrangements to welcome the team in Uyo,” Ayanbunmi explained.

He continued, “An hour after the team was airborne, I was informed that they would be landing in Port Harcourt. This sudden change disrupted many things, but we still managed to secure federal approval to allow their plane to proceed to Uyo after immigration checks in Port Harcourt. However, it seems this would have led to extra charges from the charter company, which they wanted to avoid, so they opted to travel by road from Port Harcourt to Uyo.”

Ayanbunmi added that the Libyan delegation disregarded the road transportation arrangements provided by the NFF, choosing to hire their own buses instead.

“If they chose buses without air conditioning, that decision had nothing to do with the NFF, as they arranged their own transportation. We provided security escorts in front and behind their buses, so we’re unconcerned about their complaints and threats.”
