Sports journalist and media executive Busari Sabitdeen Oyeniyi, popularly known as Niyi Busari, has been appointed Media Officer of Nigeria's U23 men's national football team, the Olympic Eagles. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the appointment on October 25, 2026, as the team prepares for its upcoming U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
Busari is the Editor-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of BSN Sports, an online sports publication covering Nigerian and international sports. He brings 13 years of experience in sports journalism, investigative reporting, digital publishing and media management to the national team.
A graduate of the University of Abuja, Busari has built a career covering football administration and development. His work through BSN Sports has established his presence in Nigeria's sports media industry, with the publication reportedly reaching more than 342 radio and television stations daily.
His appointment follows several roles within Nigeria's football and sports administration. In 2020, he became Media Manager of the Federal Capital Territory Football Association, where he handled communication and publicity activities supporting football development.
Busari was appointed Media Manager of the Nigeria Minifootball Association in 2021. He oversaw media operations during the Africa Nations Cup hosted in Ibadan that year.
In 2023, the late Honourable Ekene Adams, then chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, appointed Busari as his media aide. He also served as Financial Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria's FCT chapter.
In his new position, Busari will coordinate the Olympic Eagles' media operations, manage engagement with journalists and support the distribution of official team information during the training camp and qualifying matches.
The NFF also appointed Prince Sunday Udofia as Team Coordinator of the Olympic Eagles. Udofia previously held a similar position with Nigeria's Golden Eaglets when the U17 team successfully defended its FIFA World Cup title in Chile in 2015. Both officials were expected to join the squad as preparations began in Ijebu-Ode on October 25.
Nigeria will face DR Congo in the first leg of their U23 AFCON qualifying tie at the TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi on November 13. The return leg is scheduled for November 17 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State.
The Olympic Eagles must win the two-legged tie to advance to the final qualifying round of the 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The competition will determine Africa's representatives in the men's football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Nigeria will be seeking a return to the Olympic men's football tournament after missing the last two editions. The country won gold at Atlanta 1996, silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016. Progress in the current qualifying campaign would move the team closer to another appearance on the Olympic stage.
