Neymar Makes Santos Return but Admits He’s Not at Full Fitness

Posted : 07 February 2025

Neymar made his much-anticipated return to Santos after nearly 12 years, coming off the bench in the second half of a 1-1 draw against Botafogo in the São Paulo Championship. Despite the excitement surrounding his comeback, the Brazilian star admitted after the match that he was far from his best physical condition, stating that he needs more playing time to regain full fitness. Santos initially led through a penalty goal from Tiquinho Soares in the 38th minute, but Botafogo equalized in the 67th minute through Alexander Jesus.

Following the match, Neymar expressed his deep emotional connection to Santos, the club where he began his career, describing his return as an indescribable feeling. However, he acknowledged that he was not fully prepared for the physical demands of the game, admitting that he ran and dribbled more than he had expected. He estimated that it would take around four or five matches before he could regain his rhythm and play at his best level.

Now 33, Neymar has signed a one-and-a-half-season contract with Santos as he aims to regain top form ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Santos currently leads Group 2 of the São Paulo Championship with seven points after seven rounds, and their next fixture is scheduled for Sunday against Novorizontino. Neymar previously won six titles with Santos, including the 2011 Copa Libertadores, and hopes to add to that success in his return to the club.
