"Next time" – Shearer apologizes to Bassey after MOTM controversy

Posted : 04 March 2025

Alan Shearer, former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker, has issued a public apology to Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey after the controversy surrounding the Man of the Match award in Fulham’s victory over Manchester United.

Bassey delivered an outstanding performance at Old Trafford, excelling in defense and even scoring the opening goal in front of the Stretford End. Despite his efforts, Shearer awarded the Man of the Match to Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, a decision that did not sit well with the Fulham defender.

Shearer later explained his reasoning, revealing that the award had to be decided five minutes before full-time. He believed Fernandes had influenced the game by creating key chances for United but admitted that if he had more time, his decision might have been different.

Speaking on *The Rest Is Football* podcast, Shearer acknowledged Bassey’s dominance in defense and conceded that either the Nigerian or goalkeeper Bernd Leno deserved the award. Leno made a crucial save in regular time and stopped two penalties in the shootout.

Micah Richards, who was part of the discussion, argued that defenders are often overlooked for such accolades. He felt Bassey’s contribution to Fulham’s victory warranted greater recognition.

Shearer then addressed Bassey directly, apologizing and stating that, in hindsight, he should have been named Man of the Match. He assured the Nigerian international that he would make it up to him in the future.

Fulham, currently ninth in the Premier League, are chasing European qualification. They will turn their attention to the FA Cup, where they face Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals later this month.
