Newcastle United sign £38m winger Harvey Barnes

Posted : 23 July 2023
Newcastle United has secured the signing of talented England winger Harvey Barnes from Leicester City for a reported fee of around £38m. The 25-year-old, who has earned one cap for the England national team, has inked a five-year contract with the Magpies.

Barnes becomes Newcastle's third addition of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of forward Yankuba Minteh and Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.

Expressing his excitement, Barnes stated, "I think it's an attacker's dream to come into a team like this. I'm delighted. It's an amazing club and for me, it's a massive opportunity to come and be involved in a successful team that's doing exciting things, so I'm absolutely buzzing to be here."

Newcastle's impressive fourth-place finish in the Premier League last season has earned them a spot in the Champions League for the first time since 2003-04, making the prospect of joining the club even more appealing for Barnes.

Eddie Howe, the head coach of Newcastle, expressed his admiration for the young talent, saying, "Harvey is an exciting talent who I have admired for a long time, so I'm delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United. He is strong, quick, and very good technically, and he showed last season, in particular, that he has an eye for goal from wide positions."

Barnes' move marks the latest departure from Leicester City following their relegation from the Premier League. During his time at Leicester, he made 146 appearances in the Premier League, scoring 35 goals and providing 25 assists.

Despite his impressive performance with 13 league goals in the 2022-23 season, he was unable to prevent Leicester's relegation to the Championship.

The departure of Barnes comes after other key players, such as James Maddison, Youri Tielemans, and Caglar Soyuncu, also left the club following their relegation, with Maddison joining Tottenham in a £40m deal and Tielemans and Soyuncu moving to Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid respectively on free transfers.
