Newcastle United's midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to face a 10-month ban from football following a betting violation investigation by the Turin Prosecutor's Office and the Italian Football Federation, according to FIGC president Gabriele Gravina. Tonali, who joined the Magpies from AC Milan over the summer, has been found guilty of betting offenses. Gravina mentioned that Tonali has cooperated extensively with the investigation.
The 10-month suspension, along with an additional eight months of rehabilitation and therapy, is part of an agreement reached between the Federal Prosecutor and Sandro Tonali. Gabriele Gravina indicated that a plea bargain for 18 months of suspension has been established, with the latter eight months dedicated to recovery activities and therapy, including a minimum of 16 face-to-face meetings. This ban will also result in Tonali missing Euro 2024 next summer, assuming Italy qualifies.
Previously, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli received a seven-month ban as part of the same investigation into illegal betting. Fagioli was also required to undergo six months of therapy and participate in at least 10 public meetings within the next five months to reduce his on-pitch ban from 12 months, and he received a fine of €12,500.
Sandro Tonali, 23, made his move to Newcastle United in the summer for £55 million from AC Milan. He has featured in 12 matches across all competitions for the Premier League club, including Champions League games against his former club Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund. Tonali's time at St James' Park got off to a remarkable start as he scored on his debut in a 5-1 victory over Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.
In a related context, Newcastle United's midfielder Sandro Tonali is facing a 10-month ban from football due to betting violations, as confirmed by the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina. This decision follows an investigation by the Turin Prosecutor's Office and FIGC. Gravina revealed that Tonali has cooperated extensively with the investigation, and the suspension will also include eight months of recovery activities and therapy. This means Tonali will miss Euro 2024, and the ban comes as a result of an agreement between the Federal Prosecutor and Tonali, with the total suspension period expected to be 18 months.
