A nightmarish evening unfolded at the Theatre of Dreams as Newcastle United outclassed Manchester United 3-0, ousting them from the EFL Cup. Despite their status as defending champions, Manchester United's performance was far from impressive, and they were thoroughly outperformed by their opponents.
Miguel Almiron initiated the scoring for Newcastle during the first half, followed by an exquisite strike from Lewis Hall just eight minutes later, and Joe Willock added insult to injury by securing the third goal in the 60th minute. Right from the start, Newcastle set a high tempo, while Manchester United had their share of early opportunities.
In the 5th minute, Eddie Howe was compelled to make an early substitution due to an injury to Matt Targett. Miguel Almiron replaced the injured left-back, and he quickly found the back of the net. The winger, with an assist from Tino Livramento, slotted the ball past Andre Onana to put Newcastle in the lead. Newcastle extended their lead to two with Lewis Hall's remarkable outside-of-the-boot strike in the 36th minute.
Although Anthony Martial had a couple of opportunities early in the first half, the Frenchman couldn't capitalize on them. Joe Willock further compounded Manchester United's misery by expertly placing the ball into the bottom right corner of the net in the 60th minute.
Newcastle United emerged victorious, earning a spot in the quarter-finals at the expense of Manchester United, and they are now set to face Chelsea in the upcoming round.
