Newcastle Dominates Leicester 3-0 to Strengthen Champions League Bid

Posted : 07 April 2025

Newcastle United triumphed 3-0 over Leicester City on Monday, bolstering their Champions League aspirations and leaving the Foxes with their eighth consecutive Premier League defeat. The victory, which came on the heels of Newcastle’s League Cup win, propelled Eddie Howe’s side into fifth place, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea but with a game in hand.

The result significantly strengthens their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League, as fifth place will likely be enough given the strong performances of English clubs in continental competitions.

Leicester, on the other hand, are on a downward spiral and now face relegation to the Championship after a dismal season in the Premier League. The Foxes, who were expected to challenge for survival, were stunned early in the match as Newcastle raced to a 2-0 lead by the 11th minute.

Jacob Murphy scored both goals, the first from a simple tap-in after a Tino Livramento cross, and the second after Fabian Schar’s audacious long-range shot hit the crossbar and fell kindly for Murphy.

The game was effectively sealed before halftime when former Leicester player Harvey Barnes added a third goal, finishing from close range after Mads Hermansen saved from Joelinton. Despite a more spirited second-half performance from Leicester, they failed to break their goal drought, which has now stretched back to January.

The visitors dominated proceedings, and even when Jamie Vardy tested Nick Pope early on, it was clear that the home side’s defensive frailty left them with little chance.

As Leicester's woes continued, the home crowd was briefly uplifted by the introduction of 15-year-old Jeremy Monga, who became the second-youngest player in Premier League history. For Newcastle, the win marked another step toward securing a spot in next season’s Champions League, following their group-stage exit in the 2023/24 campaign.

Howe’s successful reign, highlighted by their first major trophy in 56 years, has made the club a strong contender for European football, while Leicester’s relegation looks almost inevitable as they prepare for life in the Championship.
