Newcastle celebrations delayed for England newcomer Burn

Posted : 18 March 2025

Dan Burn has put his celebrations on hold following Newcastle's historic League Cup victory as he focuses on preparing for his first England call-up.

Burn played a crucial role in Newcastle's 2-1 win over Premier League leaders Liverpool in the League Cup final at Wembley, scoring the first goal. This victory ended a 56-year trophy drought for the club, sparking wild celebrations in the stadium and back home in Newcastle.

For Burn, the victory was the culmination of a remarkable week. On Friday, he received his first-ever call-up to the England national team. As a lifelong Newcastle fan born just miles from the city, he might have been forgiven for immersing himself in the celebrations following the long-awaited success.

However, Burn chose not to join in the celebrations, aware that he needed to focus on his upcoming duties with England. He had to report for training on Monday morning in preparation for England's World Cup qualifier against Albania on Friday. The defender knew he had to remain sharp for his national team debut under new coach Thomas Tuchel.

Speaking at England's training base, Burn reflected on his decision to forego the party, stating, “As soon as I left the stadium on Sunday my focus completely switched to this." He continued, saying that although he had family with him, he opted for rest and sleep, knowing there would be time to celebrate later. Burn mentioned that he planned to celebrate with a parade organized by the club.

Burn's rise to prominence in football has been anything but conventional. After being released from Newcastle's academy at age 11, he had stints at lower-league clubs such as Darlington, Yeovil, Birmingham, and Wigan. These experiences helped shape his resilience, and he eventually earned a place in the Premier League with Brighton before joining Newcastle in 2022.

Despite Burn’s success at Newcastle, he initially believed his chance for an England call-up had passed. He had not been selected for the Euro 2024 squad, and he understood the decision. Now, with a new manager in charge, Burn has an opportunity to secure a spot in England's 2026 World Cup squad. He remains focused on making the most of this chance, knowing it is a dream come true for any player.
