New England Revolution sign Super Eagles star as match MVP

New England Revolution's assistant coach, Pablo Moreira, has provided details about the club's decision to acquire Super Eagles midfielder Alhassan Yusuf from Belgian team Royal Antwerp. Yusuf made the switch to Major League Soccer in August 2024 and has already been instrumental in helping his new squad break a five-game winless streak, securing a crucial 1-0 victory over Nashville SC on September 28.

In that match, Brandon Bye netted the winning goal in the 86th minute, but it was Yusuf's relentless efforts in the midfield that stood out. His capability to cover large areas of the pitch and regain possession in deeper positions played a crucial role in the Revolution's control of the game.

Moreira commended Yusuf's contributions, noting his involvement in the build-up to the goal. He expressed confidence that as Yusuf gains more match experience, he will become increasingly comfortable on the field. “As more games go, you’re going to see him be more comfortable,” Moreira stated, emphasizing the reason behind the club's interest in bringing him on board.

Moreira highlighted Yusuf's remarkable physical attributes, noting, “You don’t sneak into the Nigerian National Team without having superhuman power.” He praised Yusuf’s aggressive style of play and aerial ability, acknowledging that he consistently connects his passes effectively.

Yusuf’s arrival did not surprise Moreira, who had previously witnessed the Nigerian international’s impressive performances in Europe. He recalled a standout moment during Antwerp’s remarkable 3-2 victory against Barcelona in the Champions League, where Yusuf provided an assist. “He was man of the match in that game,” Moreira asserted, underscoring the midfielder's quality.

Head coach Caleb Porter has also lauded Yusuf's determination and versatility, noting his ability to impact both ends of the pitch. Porter remarked that Yusuf, along with other recent signings, has quickly integrated into the team and has shown great promise. “He covers a ton of ground, wins balls, and helps our team control games,” Porter stated.

Yusuf shared his excitement about the team's potential and expressed relief at contributing to their recent win. “When the goal comes toward the end, it’s kind of a relief,” he remarked, recognizing the importance of securing those points for the team. After making 30 appearances for Antwerp last season, Yusuf has already made his mark in MLS, featuring in four matches for the Revolution, including two starts. As the season unfolds, he is anticipated to take on an even more significant role as he acclimates to life in the United States.
