Neville thinks Udogie deserved first-half red card against Chelsea

Posted : 07 November 2023
Gary Neville, the Manchester United legend, strongly criticized Destiny Udogie for his reckless tackle on Raheem Sterling in the first half of the Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur match last night.

In an attempt to win the ball, Udogie launched a two-footed tackle on the Chelsea forward in the 18th minute of the game, resulting in a yellow card being shown.

The incident underwent a VAR review, but the match referee, Michael Oliver, determined that the tackle did not warrant a red card.

Neville, during his post-game analysis, rebuked the left-back, expressing his belief that Udogie was fortunate to remain on the pitch following the tackle.

"He may have made contact with the ball, but let's take a closer look at it," Gary Neville remarked on Sky Sports via Football London.

"That's the type of tackle that footballers and professionals detest. It's outdated, a challenge from 15-20 years ago, and I think it's a classic red card.

"He may escape with it because he touched the ball, but that was a shocking tackle. You just don't make those tackles anymore, or you never did because you knew you'd be in trouble.

"Raheem Sterling sees him coming and withdraws his leg, but he's a lucky player. It's universally reviled."

Udogie was eventually sent off before the hour mark for another reckless tackle on Sterling, leaving Tottenham with only nine players.

At the time of his dismissal, both teams were level, but Chelsea would go on to capitalize on their numerical advantage, handing Ange Postecoglou's side their first Premier League loss of the season.
