Manchester United legend Gary Neville criticized Dominic Solanke after the Tottenham Hotspur forward squandered a key chance to score during their Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday.
Solanke, who joined Spurs as their record signing, had been sidelined with an ankle injury since the opening game of the season against Leicester City. He returned to full fitness just in time for the North London Derby, and was included in the starting lineup by manager Ange Postecoglou, alongside Brennan Johnson and Son Heung-Min.
In the 15th minute, Son Heung-Min's misplaced pass deflected towards Solanke near the edge of the penalty area. However, Solanke was unable to convert the chance into a goal, lacking the necessary accuracy.
Neville, who was commentating for Sky Sports, expressed disappointment in the 27-year-old's missed opportunity. He remarked, "Solanke had ample space and time but failed to capitalize, letting the chance slip away," as reported by The BBC.
Neville added, "He needed to do better; he had six or seven meters to himself and took too long to act. You don't often get that kind of time in such situations."
The missed chance by Solanke, along with other missed opportunities from Tottenham, proved detrimental as Arsenal took the lead in the 64th minute. Gabriel Magalhães scored with a header from Bukayo Saka’s corner kick, securing the match for Arsenal.
Solanke and his Tottenham teammates will next face Coventry City in the Carabao Cup third round on September 18, hoping to bounce back from their recent setback.
